Battery Powered Pants, Polly Pocket, and Medieval Music

Ever seen pants with built-in motors or a giant Polly Pocket?

This week, we're diving into the curious and unexpected with battery-powered pants redefining hikes, a modern twist on medieval music, and a life-sized Polly Pocket experience that’s pure nostalgia.

And don’t miss next week’s edition with guest curator Max Morse, all about golf seeping into culture ⛳️ 🏌️

1. Poly Pocket goes big

Following the success of their Barbie Dreamhouse collaboration, Airbnb and Mattel are now offering a chance to live out your childhood fantasies in a life-sized Polly Pocket compact. The two-story "Slumber Party Fun" house is a '90s dream come to life, complete with vintage-themed decor and nostalgic surprises at every turn. It's part of Airbnb's new "Icons" category, which showcases one-of-a-kind stays where the accommodation itself is the destination.

It's a clever way for Mattel to introduce Polly Pocket to a new generation, all while reminding parents why they loved the brand in the first place and generate some buzz. Just don't forget to pack your butterfly hair clips and mood ring.

2. Sultry serenades and bubonic beats

Remember Teenage Engineering, the mad scientists behind the design of the now infamous Rabbit R1? Well, they're back, this time cramming an entire Renaissance faire into a sleek, modern beat machine. Meet the EP-1320, or as they've dubbed it, the Instrumentalis Electronicum – the world's first electronic medieval instrument.

Packed with hundreds of authentic medieval sounds, from hurdy-gurdies to Gregorian chants, this digital minstrel lets you mix, and I quote, "sultry serenades" and "bubonic beats". It even includes sound effects ranging from coconut horse hooves to "an actual dragon" (I'm curious about the audition process for that one).

3. “Do you have a charger? My pants are about to die”

Arc'teryx, once the secret handshake of hardcore mountaineers, has become the unlikely darling of streetwear culture. With its sleek designs and enigmatic dead bird logo, it's now as likely to be spotted on Frank Ocean or Drake as on a frost-bitten alpinist. The brand's ascent to cool-kid status peaked with a baffling TikTok trend of people showering in $700 Gore-Tex jackets – because nothing says "I've made it" quite like drenching yourself in high-performance outerwear, right?

But Arc'teryx isn't content with just conquering mountain peaks and social feeds. They're now venturing into sci-fi territory with their latest innovation: the MO/GO pants. Developed in partnership with Skip, a Google X Labs spinoff, these high-tech trousers feature a lightweight electric motor at the knee that gives you a strength boost on uphill hikes (supposedly making you feel 30 pounds lighter).
