Owl Hunting, Cannabis Fashion, and Family Gaming

Drake vs. Kendrick takes an unexpected turn, while Kith elevates smoking accessories

This week we're exploring everything from rap beef video games to active gaming consoles, and even the high-end evolution of cannabis culture. I’ve also added a little bonus curious thing at the end of the newsletter.

In other exciting news, Amanda Gordon is going to be our guest curator next week. Can’t wait to see what she picks!

1. No owls were harmed during the making of this video game

The most notable music event this year has undoubtedly been the rap beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. It's taken over every corner of the internet: podcasts, merch, music videos, concerts, memes, Jeopardy... and now, we even have a video game.

Not Like Us: The Game is a web-based whack-a-mole clone, inspired by Kendrick's music video. In the original video, Kendrick beats an owl piñata (a clear jab at Drake's OVO logo) until its candy innards pour out.

The game itself is simple and very basic in my opinion. However, its viral success goes to show how eager people are to participate in and contribute to big pop culture moments.

2. From joystick jockeys to livingroom athletes

When we think of gaming, "fitness" and "quality family time" aren't usually the first words that come to mind. But what if there was a gaming console designed specifically for those purposes?

That’s exactly what Nex Playground was intended for: a system that leverages recent advancements in computer vision and machine learning to offer a more accessible and affordable version of motion-sensing gaming, reminiscent of the Xbox Kinect.

The console translates real-world movements into on-screen actions, allowing players to shoot hoops, block soccer goals, or even play whack-a-mole with their whole body. While reviewers are generally enthusiastic about the concept, they all note that the library of content and games is still fairly limited.

3. Puff, puff, posh: Kith and Houseplant elevate smoking accessories

As cannabis legalization spreads globally, we're witnessing a big shift: marijuana brands are now offering the kind of premium services and products typically associated with high-end alcohol companies. Among the wave of impeccably designed, upscale items for smokers, Seth Rogen's Houseplant brand has been a standout.

And now they are partnering with lifestyle brand Kith to create a line of sophisticated homeware items (side note for our Los Angeles area readers: Kith is opening a stunning flagship store in Malibu that's def worth checking out). Some items are already sold out, so get it while you can.

Bonus curious thing: Dawn’s new reel

I'm excited to share a new reel for Dawn featuring highlights from my past work. This wouldn't have been possible without the incredible Geoff Kim, who helped bring this piece together. The projects here represent the kind of work I’m passionate about, and it's exactly the type of projects I will continue pursuing under Dawn. Hope you enjoy!
